The General Society assisted the Alabama Society with the fabrication and erection of the monument through the use of its “Grant Program”. The county is the location of Ft. Mimms, the site of the largest massacre East of the Mississippi River and where the Creek War began. The county is also the location of Ft. Bowyer where the English troops gathered to mass the attack of New Orleans and then retreated there after they were defeated.
